Exciting news for Cricut Gypsy owners was announced yesterday. After a very long wait it is finally possible to link the cartridges that are on your Gypsy device to the Cricut Craftroom. You can get all of the details on the Cricut.com site HERE.
There are lengthy instructions and a list of Frequently Asked Questions and you should be sure to read everything and follow these directions carefully. This long awaited update will allow Gypsy owners with extensive cartridge libraries linked on their devices to use the same cartridges seamlessly with the Cricut Craftroom - they will no longer be required to insert each cartridge before cutting their projects.
There is also helpful news for Gypsy owners with devices that do not work - new repair options were announced.

In a post on the Cricut Community Message Board HERE, Nathan added some additional information. He confirmed that the current Gypsy model will no longer be produced but stated that support and content updates will continue to be offered.
The final blow has been dealt to the Cricut Design Studio program. No more content updates will be provided which means that no cartridges issued after April 11, 2013 can be used with the program. If you are a Design Studio user be sure to go to the update page HERE, to get the final content update.
The update version number is V130401 - save the file to your computer and then run it to install the last cartridges.
One more note - it is "One Buck Wednesday" at Jessica Sprague and there are a number of kits that are either $1 or 50% off. Echo Park, Carta Bella, Jenni Bowlin, Samantha Walker, Lori Whitlock, Carina Gardner and more all have interesting items to try out at bargain prices for digital scrapping or cutting. The papers and embellishments can be used for print and cut projects on the Silhouette machines as well. (Click the image on the left to go to the site).
Do any of you still use Cricut Design Studio? After years of daily use (sometimes for hours a day) I have used it only rarely since I added the Silhouette machines to my craft room. It is very hard to switch back to the Cricut program once you get used to the abilities of the Silhouette Studio such as one click shadows and other helpful editing tools. For anyone who doesn't own a Gypsy (or doesn't like the small black and white screen) and can't easily use the Craftroom due to internet issues, this is the end of an era.
Yesterday I woke up with a very scratchy throat and very little voice - probably allergies since I was outdoors for a long while watching the parade. I had planned to do a video with the butterfly card instructions yesterday - if my voice improves, I'll do it later today - if not...it will be a words and pictures post for now.

thank you diane for the links for updates. i have a question...i haven't dug out my cricut create in awhile, so i hooked it up to update my design studio, now i may be a little senile, but is there supposed to be a machine update also? will the DS complete all that is needed to update the machine. and do i need to go through this will my expression also? it's been awhile since i've done all this, and i'm with you. since i got my cameo, i haven't used DS much lately, although i still use the cricuts.
ReplyDeletethank you again for all you do!
Hi KAT - This Design Studio update just adds cartridges to the program. I don't believe that there has been a Design Studio required update to the Cricut machine for a long time. This update will just add new cartridges to the list in your program. In the past, if the firmware needed to be updated, an alert would come up when you tried to cut to a machine and then you just would follow the directions on the screen to update. It's been a long time since I had to update firmware but I don't know when you did it last!
DeleteI LOVE my Design Studio. I guess I won't be buying any new cartridges. I did win a Silhouette Portrait but have not had the time to sit down and learn how to use it. I also tried Cricut Craft Room but found it a little more difficult.
ReplyDeleteWell, at least all of the cartridges released up until now are in Design Studio. There are so many images that it should be enough! I don't know why they won't continue to add them as promised in the past but it seems they are moving on (and many of their customers have moved on to other systems). Congratulations on winning the Portrait - that's exciting! Have you tried the software yet? It is very easy to learn and when I try to switch back and use Design Studio or the Craftroom I get frustrated. I primarily use the Cricuts as freestanding machines now.
DeleteI was blessed to win a Cameo recently (and then found the Designer Studio on sale for $27 - score!) I used to use my Cricut and Cricut Design Studio together as an effective time-saving and paper-saving tool. Without updates for CDS, I will not be likely to purchase any new Cricut cartridges as I don't always have internet access when I'm doing my cutting (won't be able to use Craft Room) and I prefer to know exactly how big my cuts will be to be able to organize then to best use my paper and to know if they'll fit where I want them or not. So now I need to decide if I really want to keep all the Cricut stuff I have or let all the stuff go and just move forward with my new Cameo! I really had the best of both worlds for a while, but it might be a new, lighter weight era in my crafting space now!
ReplyDeleteRuth - congrats on winning a Cameo - you will love it. The regular software is very good and the Designer edition adds some nice features so it is great that you got it at a good price. It's a hard decision - I know I have way more Cricut stuff than I am using regularly and I too have been thinking of selling or giving away some of it. There are still some favorites I will hang onto but I am lucky to have a lot of space here - if we move, it will be a different story!
DeleteI still use design studio for ALL of my cricut cutting. This announcement makes me really sad.
ReplyDeleteI also feel sad about this in some ways. If only they had improved the free standing program. The internet based solution does not work for everyone and I still find it very limiting. Once you have worked with a program that gives you one click shadows it is hard to go back!
DeleteDesign Studio will still work as it always has - you just won't be able to use any cartridges that are released in the future with it. So any customers who are dedicated to Design Studio probably will stop buying cartridges which seems to be a bad result for the company!
I've loved my Design Studio. Just finished 3 projects in the last week with it. I most likely will never switch to the Silhouette or use CCR as I prefer to craft without the computer or the internet. It's nice to have the option when I need it though. Haven't felt the need for anymore carts either. Think I have collected 20 now and always seem to have what I need. While I'm a little disappointed about DS, as long as I can continue to use it as I have been, it's not that big of a deal for me. Feel bad for the others who use it more though.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like you have a good set up that works for you. I do like crafting with the computer but I know it is not for everyone. I'd be curious to know your list of 20 cartridges that work so well - it seems that people are always searching for certain images. There are some "super cartridges" that contain a lot more than others and some of the later ones repeat the same types of images in slightly different variations. At least there is a big library you could still use in all of the cartrdges that are currently released if you did decide to add a few more.
DeleteDiane, what about this comment on Twitter?
ReplyDeleteWarning: linking your #Gypsy to CCR will cause you to lose access to the 5 free promo carts (TBBM, Smiley, etc.) #cricut I'm waiting 4 fix.
Would you recommend waiting?
I have seen the same information on various groups and sites and I would recommend waiting if you don't want to lose the ability to cut with those cartridges until a fix is made - it could take a while!
DeleteNO!!!! Not at all happy about this news! Yes, I still use Design Studio. I do have a Cameo and go back and forth between the two machines. Guess this will push me further in the direction of NOT buying any more cartridges. I have s gypsy but rarely use it as it's so hard to see anything on that little screen. And I totally do NOT like Craftroom. Ugh! Ok, vent over. Thanks for keeping us updated, Diane!
