Think Pink (and a special giveaway)

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  You have probably seen pink in some unusual places.  Many organizations and companies are making special promotional offers in support of breast cancer research.  Some papercrafting groups hold special "Crop for the Cure" events this month.

Sometimes I wonder if all of the money spent producing the pink items might be excessive.  I had my annual mammogram this week (if you haven't had yours, please call now to schedule it!) and all of these items were at the check in desk.  I also read some reports about the very small percentage (5%) of the proceeds from the sales of pink NFL gear that actually go to the American Cancer Society.

I think nearly everyone has been touched in some way by this disease.  Great progress has been made in detection and treatment but there is always more to be done.  If you or someone you know is fighting this disease, albums and journals can be very therapeutic for those in treatment and their families.

The pink ribbon is a widely recognized symbol for breast cancer awareness and I am often asked if this symbol is on any cartridges (there are ribbons on Pink Journey, Stand and Salute - page 31, Autumn Celebrations - page 54, Car Decals - page 53).  You can also trim the bottom from an ampersand (&) to create a ribbon (some fonts work better than others).

I'd like to give one of my readers this set from Sizzix called "Scrap Pink."  It includes an original size steel rule die, a Sizzlits die, a Simple Impressions embossing folder and a Terturz Texture Plate with ribbons on one side and words on the other.  There is also a key ring ribbon on a chain and it is all packed in a plastic pouch with handles.

Here are the two ribbons cut by the dies...

...and samples of the embossing.

These are the words on the opposite side of the embossing texture plate.

If you could make good use of this set, leave a comment on this post or any other post up to the end of the month.  Please comment only once on each post but you can comment on every post until the end of the month for more chances.  I will draw a name on Halloween and post it on November 1st.  Please be sure to leave a way for me to contact you if your name is drawn.

Pink Journey images from Cricut.com site

The Cricut cartridge "Pink Journey" is available for $19.99 this week on the Cricut.com site HERE.  For years this cartridge was only available at Michael's and was bundled with a pink machine.  If  you are one of the many people who wanted this cartridge but didn't need an extra Cricut machine this should be good news for you!

Diane, one of my readers from upstate New York, contacted me about a special offer from Amuse Studio.  For Breast Cancer Awareness month Amuse Studio is giving away 10,000 Fight Like a Girl Breast Cancer Awareness stamp sets. There is a $3.00 fee for shipping and handling. The package includes Breast Cancer information from the American Cancer Society along with a coupon for 20% off a future Amuse Studio order.

Diane is a consultant for Amuse Studio and you can order this free set from her website HERE.  I took a quick look at the site and they have lots of other very nice stamp sets that may tempt you.  Diane is located in upstate New York.  If you would like to find a consultant near you, you should be able to use the locator on the Amuse Studio site.

Don't forget to take your 12 photos today if you are doing "12 on the 12th in 2012."  Do you have any special plans for the weekend?  The weather is getting very cold here and we have our semi annual town recycling "Drop Off - Swap Off" event on Saturday.

  1. I had my mammogram on October 3. They called me October 10 to say that I had a suspicious spot and had me go in yesterday (October 11) for an ultrasound and another mammogram. After spending most of the afternoon being pulled, poked, squeezed, and squished, they couldn't find the same spot. I will be going back in six months for another mammogram to see if the spot shows up again.

15 minutes for the initial mammogram can save your life!!

  8. I had my mammogram done a few weeks ago and also had to return. I will also need to return in 6 months but thank goodness everything was OK this time. On another subject as Diane mentioned I do wonder what percentage the Cancer Association does really receive. This is a worthy cause but I also wonder how many other charities have been undercut as this charity seems to now dominate charity fundraising such as the Heart Association. This has affected my grandaughter since she was born and she has so many challenges ahead of her in terms of numerous surgeries, as well as overcoming a stroke she had at age 7. She has been raising money for Heart Association for severl years now and is only 11 years of age. It has been a struggle but she won't give up trying. Joan Murphins

  16. Back in 1980 when I was pregnant with my daughter my doctor said "Tell your mother she's way past due for her breast exam! She hasn't been in for several years." Obviously this was before all the privacy rules! I told Mom, but she never went in. In 1989 she found a lump, it was bad and 99% of her lymph nodes were positive. In 1991 it came back in her bones and base of her brain. We lost her in 1993. My sister found a lump in 2000, but due to regular mammograms, it was very small and she is a 12 year survivor. I am very regular with my mammograms. What if Mom had gone in and been checked back in 1980 and continued regularly? Bottom line....GET 'EM CHECKED!!!

  17. I had to have a core biopsy done 3 years ago. I felt a lump in the shower and my mammo looked suspicious . Lucky for me it was fibrocystic but it was a trying time for me since I had lost my mother earlier that year to bladder cancer. Diane remember your followers to do monthly self checks also. Just get good and soapy and feel for lumps. By doing this simple exam in the shower monthly you get to where you know if things feel different to you and you might find a lump earlier when there is still quite some time till your next mamo. the hospital I work at has a Pink Ribbon day every year. My friend and fellow nurse that is head of this project pick my brain last year for catchy designs to use. jls at eplus dot net

  19. Your timing o n this send shivers down my spine. I was checking my email and saw your email post and I just about dropped everything in m hand (truthfully, I did!) my mum had breast cancer when she was in her 30's and the cancer came back but in the form of Hodgkin's lymphoma. It has been a thought road but we managed to keep up a good fight. Few months ago I had my routine mammogram and wouldn't you know it, something of a very large mass is there. I had the worst luck with my health so of course given the history and already fighting a blood issue I am beyond scared. Just earlier, I come to find out the large lump is benign . However, the doctor scared the crap out of me about the future prospects :( Anyhow, it is so amazing that you can go through it with family and friends but still can not imagine the dread and fear. I almost feel guilty that some of the ladies I met in the waiting room won't be so lucky. I can only pray...anyhow, thank you for making women aware of mammograms ..your awareness can save lives. Your crafts have been such a source of distraction when I have needed it the most. Just, thanks so much! Whomever wins pls know that is a very powerful gift Nd reminder to keep on top of it. The pink ribbon can save lives..it s a powerful reminder of those strong women who have, are going through the fear, have conquered it or have passed on. Okay, please forgive me for rattling on..it is just a coincidence you posted this today..or is it? Thanks so much..okie, off my soapbox..so sorry.

  24. What a coincidence -- I just made a card today with that very same "Hope" cut, only this was for a friend with Lyme disease. I don't have the ribbon die so I went with a lime-green 3-D flower, but that die would be a very versatile one to have as the ribbon symbol is used by so many different causes. Another nice card, Diane -- and those sprinkle packages look delicious!

  28. Thank you for all the info you share with us, My Aunt Stella is a 7 year survivor twice in remision during this period but she is such a fighter and inspiration to all of us. Saddly this is not something we can afford to skip, prevention is key! Thanks for the chance to win this pink set, My friend and I will be Making cards and take themto a near by hospital to be distributed to cancer patients. Is minimal what we can do, but at least we might help cheer someone up.
Thank you again for all you do!

  30. Speaking of how much charities actually get from fund raising, my niece has spent her career working for non-profits - Her first job was with the Heart Assoc. They have so much overhead that a very small percentage of donations actually go to the cause.
She now works as an event coordinator for Ronald McDonald house, more money is actually put into the charity, but not from the sale of "Happy Meals" if you read the fine print only 10 cents from every sale goes to RMH... Most of the funds are from local events.

This post is dedicated to my best friend Lisa, who was just diagnosed - be strong and Fight like a GIRL!
