Blogoversary Part 4 - Creative Charms

Welcome to part four of my Fourth Blogoversary Celebration.  I'll have some more photos from Germany to share soon - we were a bit preoccupied with the Super Bowl yesterday and I didn't get a chance to do any more photo editing.  We had a great time watching the game with lots of neighborhood friends - if only our team could have been the winners...wait until next year!

Here is how the giveaway works:

Just like last year, I have three boxes that I will be filling with gifts that I'll send to three blog readers.  Each day I'll add more things to the boxes until they are full and ready to ship.  You can comment on every post until the boxes are full to maximize your chance to be chosen by random draw.  You don't have to be a follower or a subscriber to win, however, if you enjoy my blog, subscribing by email will help you make sure that you don't miss anything - just click HERE and fill in your address, then reply to the confirmation email to be added to the list.  If you prefer to "follow" you can do that by clicking "Join this site" at the top of the right side column.

If you are a subscriber or follower, you can leave another comment and have a second chance each day as a way for me to thank you for your support.  If you are a Facebook user you can also "like" the Capadia Designs page HERE and leave another comment telling me that you are a Facebook fan.

You can leave comments everyday so you will have multiple chances to be one of the three winners.  Please don't leave more than 3 on one day (1 comment, 2 follower or subscriber, 3 Facebook fan).  When you leave a comment be sure that you don't have the box checked to be notified of follow up comments so you don't get tons of emails clogging up your in box.  Please be sure to leave some way for me to contact you if you are one of the lucky three - you can leave your email address and use (at) and (dot) to help avoid spam.  The step by step directions for leaving comments can be found in THIS POST.

Remember - you can't just leave a random comment - you have to answer the question in the post (so I know you are paying attention!).

Today I have added two sets of Creative Charms items to each box.  I have served on the Creative Charms Design Team for the last couple of years and I looked through my stash to find some pink and sparkly items.  Each box will have a set of vintage jewels and some braided daisy flowers , groovy petal flowers or sequin trimmed butterflies.

Here is the question for today - be sure to answer it in a comment below.

When you craft, do you like to do everything "from scratch" (make your own flowers, experiment with different designs until you find the one that looks "right") or do you find it easier to use pre-made embellishments, follow sketches, work from a color chart or generally "scraplift" ideas that you have seen in magazines, online or in a store?

Thanks for playing along.  I will try to get more photos from the trip posted later today.

I also want to thank Emily M, Jules, Sharon C. and Marilyn Mae who tried the color and pattern challenge project last month. I have a little (very little) something that I got in Germany for each of you - I'll be contacting you to get your addresses.

  1. I normally create most of my items from "scratch" but I like some type of inspiration. When I say I create from scratch I mean that I'll design my own lettering (I don't use a lot of thickers or bought die cuts) but I do use gems or flowers (such as Creative Charms.

I use a lot of challenge sites for my inspiration. It gives me a starting point and I go from there. Otherwise, I create things that have been requested. I have a hard time looking at my paper and piles of embellies and coming up with what I want to do.

  2. I like to start from scratch, however, I do use things I see as inspiration. Find it hard to work from sketches, need to play and manipulate to settle on a design! More fun too!

  3. It totally depends on the project I am working on at that time. Generally though, I would say it's from scratch, however, I have done it all. (lol) Thanks.

  7. I do a bit of both. Sometimes I like to spend the time creating something from the start and other times it is just easier to peel and stick an embellishment to get a job done.

I came to your site originally because you featured help with the Cricut and I do use my Cricut to create a lot of embellishments.

  8. With the advent of flower shoppe, i find myself making most of my stuff from scratch (I love paper flowers!), but I adore going to a sketch when I am stuck and the paper or photos aren't speaking to me. Thanks for the chance to win! lclass003atgmaildotcom

  9. I do follow some sketches and also get alot of inspiration from other blog sites, mag. etc.
I must say that I do buy mostly all my embellishments and only once in awhile I will make my own flowers, etc.

  14. When doing layouts I sometimes use a layout sketch, but mostly it is done from scratch. For cardmaking I use a little of everything. I use pre-made and made from scratch embellishments, scraplift ideas and make from scratch. I just go with what feels right at the time!

  15. Hi Diane, I like doing both, making stuff from scratch and using already made stuff, however I get a kick out of doing stuff from scratch. I also get inspired from all the lovely things I see on blogs. Thanks for the chance to win this great box of goodies.

  16. I am a bit eclectic with what I do. I am inspired by others and I tend to scraplift their idea with my own twist. I like card maps. I make most of my own embellishments but love to enhance premade ones. I should write notes to myself when I am laying in bed because I seem to come up with most of my ideas then! Unfortunately, in the morning I seem to have forgotten them when the sun rises!

  17. Dine, these questions are so much fun, and I am loving what you are putting in your Blogaversary boxes this year!! I am a "from scratch" crafter... generally working from the seat of my pants, and however it works out is what we get!

  20. I am a scraplifter sometimes, but also love to do everything from scratch. The from scratch takes so much time for me to complete, i have to get creativeness from others just to get all the cards i want to ccomplete done. I do have a few subscriptions to wonderful idea-full magazines, and love to check out blogs - especially yours - as well as check out the local stores. One never knows where creativity will strike!

  21. I love sscrapbooking! I do a little of all of the above. If I use other people's ideas from the internet, books or blogs, It might give me an idea and I then make it may own. I like making my flowers and making them opersonizaed but once in a while I do use made flowers just because I had something realy pretty an different. Kinda like the ones you have put in these boxes. And yes, I am one of your followers on your Blog Everyday! I love your creative ideas. Thank you!!!!

  22. I love using made bling, flowers and extras if I find something unique. However I love making my flowers. I do scraplift once in a while but, I do change them upo to make them my own. And Yes, I do follow as a subscriber on the email!. Thank you!!!

  23. Generally do things from scatch...however, if it's an element that can add a certain "charm" and it fits with what I have made, I'll use it.

Sometimes an element that I have starts the WHOLE project, but I try not to overdo premade elements because I think it takes away from the "made by me" theme!

Time is sometimes a factor. I use tons of premade elements on cards.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love your Facebook page. I follow it everyday! I useually scraplift when I've hit a wall and can't come up with something special but, I make it my own. I love using special flowers if they are special but, I enjoy making my own. I a kind of new at all of this and would ove to win one of these boxes. You are so wonderful to do this! Thank you so much.

  25. I love looking around at everything that others have done, so I tend to go into a project with an idea of what I want it to look like... I try to keep it mine by not following it exactly as the person who inspired me, because I generally have multiple inspirations - I don't usually print it out, I go from memory... I am into dies these days, so I am loving making my embellishments myself - and I try to add a quilled element whenever I can!!
As always, thanks for the opportunity, it is fun answering your questions.

  32. I am a from scratch scrapbooker for the most part but do add the occasional pre-made embellishment. I love to make flowers but when it comes to butterflies 99% of the time they are already done for me.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I prefer to use emblishments that are pre-made because I do not feel like I'm really all that "crafty". Instead of following sketches, I like to find cards online that are made and "borrow" their designs. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway and the opportunity to win.

  39. I love to scraplift a project and give it my creative twist. It depends on my mood and to my time limit; as to whether or not, I like to make everything from scratch or buy it premade. I feel the need to make every card, tag, etc; that comes along! I think this is due to me being a SAHM and me wanting to justify all my scrapping stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I usually use my Cricut or Imagine to help me create cards, however I also use premade items from the scrapbook stores to help me along the way. And I get many ideas from your blog, which helps a lot.

  41. I do both, create from scratch and scraplift. It just depends on both my level of creativity the day I am scrapping and the type of photos I'm scrapping. This year, I am trying not to buy any embellishments because 1) I already have so many and 2) if I don't have a premade one to match what I'm doing, I should be able to find something on one of the many cricut cartridges I own to make.

  44. I make most of my cards and their embellishments from scratch, but I do look everywhere for design inspiration, i.e. magazines, online, forums, etc. I do look for inexpensive embellishments at fabric stores and off-price stores (learned that from you!) and will used them if they fit the design.

  45. And I am an email subscriber! :)

    ReplyDelete
  46. I usually use manufactured embellishments, but come up with my own designs. I do join challenges using specific sketches, etc., but don't rely on them solely to create.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I rarely use sketches for LO's - I get all my photos printed 4x6, crop as needed, and go from there. I don't do a whole lot of embellishing on my pages other than titles, mats, borders, and cricut cuts. For cards, I sometimes try to use sketches but I am usually in too much of a hurry to look through books and websites and just need to get that birthday card made and in the mail! I do have drawers full of embellishments but usually forget to use them, other than maybe gems and other finishing touches.

To answer today's question....I wish I had it in me to be more of a from scratch designer...I love following sketches and feel I can do some of my best work following those sketches. I do try and scraplift basic ideas but never whole projects...I always end up changing the original scraplifted idea into my own.

  97. I am a "from scratch" crafter, generally. I have limited myself to the amount of embellishments I buy. That includes stamps, so I do most of my sentiments on the computer.

I do enter some sketch challenges and find it just that - a challenge, but I usually decide what kind of card I need to make, what I want it to say, and go from there. I do have a "card idea" file but find I hardly ever access it. One thing about me, I NEVER like to do something exactly like anything else that's been done. ;)

  102. Oh, this one is a little more difficult. For me it depends entirely on what I am working on and who it is for. It also has a lot to do with what kind of mood I am in. When I'm making several duplicates of albums or something for gifts for family for a holiday, I'll often go for the pre-made to save myself some time. Most of the time though I prefer to make most of what I can myself. Of course there are some things that I am never without on a project that I can't make myself...like ribbon and gem stones...etc. ;)

  112. This one is kinda tough. I do from scratch in that I don't often use stickers and sticker letters. I always cut letters and shapes with the Cricut, but I do use embellies like flowers and rhinestones, etc. I usually use the designs in my head. I am occasionally guilty of using scrapbook page kits:-) Whew!

  113. I always start out to scraplift or follow a sketch, but somehow realize that what I'm doing is completely different. I don't make many embellishments because I don't use lots. Most of my cards get mailed, so I usually stick to CAS.

  115. Wow, beautiful embellishments! It really depends on how much time I can spend on the craft at hand. If it is a last minute thing I gereally use premade embellisments otherwise I love to build from scratch. Again thank you for the chance to win.
    Have a lovely day.

I love to craft from scratch...it's my fix for the day, and it's always unique. But a lot of the time I use ready made embellishments too....I love to group and combine several ready made things together to form clusters...that's creative too. I only scraplift when I'm desperate and feeling like I'm stuck in a rut, or I find a very creative and worthy LO to lift. I do it all....hehe.

  118. I look at a lot of blogs for inspiration but then by the time I'm doing a project I forgot what I saw and then do it by scratch. :)

  119. Hi; I like to make my own flowers and use sketches (not color schemes from them) as inspiration. But that said I have a stash of premade flowers that I need to use up. So I guess I do both...not usually on the say layout though. I cut my titles with my Expressions 90% of the time.

  121. Again I look forward to your emails so that I can be inspired. I love what you have in your boxes and hopefully I will win one. I like to create my own cards as it makes me use my brain. I do use premade embellishments, but the design is mine. Thanks for doing this wonderful and different giveaway.

  122. i guess i'd have to say i mostly do my projects from scratch although i sometimes will use pre-made embellishments if i'm in a hurry. i find it difficult to work from a sketch. i usually just start laying out my design and play with it until it suits me. i do peruse various blogs and web sites looking for inspiration for cards, but lo's are usually just from my head.

  125. I love crafting all different ways. I have to say following a sketch or color challenge is a challenge for me. Go I guess I like to create from scratch but I look at so many ideas ( blogs, books, nature, stores,) I really wonder if any of my ideas are really my ideas of did I see it somewhere.

  129. 1. I get inspiration from you and other blogs but I like to make my cards or projects from 'scratch'. The main idea might come from someone else, but I have my own twist on it...then it is mine :)

When I started making cards I used to use premade flowers and embellishments but now I love making my own flowers.

  132. It really depends on the particular project. Generally, I use pre-made embellishments, but I have been known to make my own. As far as following sketches goes, I don't usually use them. If I do, I usually end up changing something about them. I find more inspiration in actual projects people post online.

  134. I like to use pre-made items when I scrap

  135. I do a bit of both - from "scratch" and "scraplifting", but mostly from scratch. I like to play around with designs until I find one I like. Sometimes I have an idea then try to make it happen. Sometimes I have to make my own embellishments to get what I'm looking for. I try to personalize my cards/pages for that specific occasion/person. For example, some friends of ours just lost their baby and she described the dress the baby will be buried in and I'm making a card with a heart behind 2 hands holding a baby. The hands represent Jesus' hands cuddling the baby. Baby was just 6 weeks and 2 days old and was born with 1/2 a heart. She was a fighter!

  143. Well, I hate to "cop-out", but I do both. I sell all the cards I make and sometime for holidays that means multiples, so if I am making something that needs an embellishment that I can buy affordably and that I love, I buy it. I also adapt some of my cards from ideas from my favorite designers ~ it saves a lot of time. I donate all of the money I collect for missions for our church. It is a near full-time job for me!
    Thanks so much Diane

  144. I usually prefer to make my own embellishments for cards. I sometimes use pre-made ones for scrapbook if they fit perfectly but even those I often add my own touch to. I have never been able to work from someone else's sketch but do occasionally scraplift a card design and then adjust to make it my own.

    ReplyDelete
  145. I'm a little all over the place with scrapping. Sometimes I make my own and do everything by scratch, other time, I need the kick in the pants and use pre-mades and sketchs.

    ReplyDelete
  146. I'm a follower too for sometime now:)

  147. Because my time is always so limited, I usually incorporate some premade embellishment although my preference would be to make my own. I do keep photos of others cards on hand to get me started on a layout or general idea which is very helpful because the options are so endless.

    ReplyDelete
  148. I normally start with something I have scraplifted and use that as a starting point and then go from there.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I like to look for inpiration and then I go by scratch to make it my own. I like to hand make flowers and embellishments that is probably why a project takes awhile to complete :)

  154. Why does it have to be one or the other, Diane? I might use a sketch but then create all the pieces "from scratch," or mix and match pieces I've made/stamped with purchased items. I love the freedom of crafting that allow me to add whatever "feels right."

    ReplyDelete
  155. I like to make my cards from scratch, but I do look at blogs to get some inspiring ideas. If it's an interactive card, I have to follow the tutorial pretty closely. I prefer to make my own flowers -- Cuttlebug quilled flowers are my favorite. I prefer to make my own die cuts, but purchase ribbon, jewels, buttons for my embellishments. I get alot of inspiration for you, Diane...you're the BEST!!

  157. I wish I had more time to do crafts from scratch, but not when I work full time and run around with my 2 kids. I'm just glad to put something together with some 'pre-made' embellies! I feel if it gives me the result that I'm happy with, then it's just as good. I like to use sketches or other inspiration from blogs & sites, which end up being a guide for me. I love that crafters share!!

    ReplyDelete
  158. I guess I do a combination of many of these things. I don't care for sketches but I get inspiration from many blogs. I like to make my own embellishments and also use my Cricut for many things. I rarely use stickers and I love my punches. I like your blog because you "mix it up" with many different ideas.

  163. I do both. My scrapbook pages are all from scratch but if I find a card I really like, I scraplifft the theme or idea but usually give it my own twist.

    ReplyDelete
  164. I am definitely a "scraplifter!" :) I get most of my ideas online, but I also get some from magazines. If I do a complicated layout, then I do sketch out my design first. Thanks for another chance to win! :)

  165. I prefer to create from 'scratch. Soemtimes I see a card someone made and recreate it to some extent...but like to add my own twist to it. Sometimes I find things as I am cleaning up and see if I can make a card from those findings. I also keep a lot of cutouts from my Cricut in a box...and then find that I am able to create a very unique card from those cutouts.

  167. I do both, I love the idea of getting inspiration from other bloggers. I love using my Cricut, stamps and punches! I will sometimes buy embellishments, depending on my project. Thank you for a chance to win some great prizes!

  168. I do a little of "making it from scratch" and little of scraplifting. I'm getting more and more into scraplifting because I've got so much to do and it goes so much faster if I can focus on accents and journaling rather than the LO of cards and scrapbook pages.

    ReplyDelete
  169. I like to make my projects from scratch in general, but I do find some store bought items helpful in putting my projects together more quickly. I make my own layouts for the most part but I like a good sketch to inspire some good ideas too. I also love to be inspired by what other crafters make as well. Hugs- Glora
