Shimmery Birthday Card

August is the month of many birthdays in our family.  My husband and both of our sons have August birthdays.  To make things even more interesting, my mother-in-law and brother-in-law have August birthdays.  We have five family birthdays in eight days! So, I have been making some birthday cards.

For this card, I embossed a piece of ivory cardstock cut at 4 x 5 1/4 inches (to layer on a 4 1/4 x 5 1/2 inch A2 card base).  I used the Cuttlebug "Everyday Greetings" combo set folder to emboss the cardstock.  Then I colored the raised flowers with my ProMarkers.  I used three shades of blue (powder blue, sky blue and duck egg) and two shades of green (lime green and bright green).  I tried to be fairly neat but didn't worry too much about small imperfections.

I sprayed my colored cardstock with "sun sisters" Glimmer Mist by Tattered Angels.  I attended a workshop by Tattered Angels in January and I learn about "committing to the spray" but I still get the "dreaded dots" at times. Fortunately a quick press with a paper towel helps to make them less noticeable.

In order to speed the drying process, I used a heat gun.  The cardstock has a tendency to curl up when it dries.  You can flatten it under a stack of heavy books for a day or so, OR, you can use lots of extra adhesive to keep it flat on your card top.

The card surface is incredibly shimmery and smooth.  I added three gradient gem stickers in the flower centers for some extra definition and sparkle.

I used a foam circle to lift the sentiment above the card surface.

The sentiment is yet another of the pre-made sentiments from CraftWork Cards - My friend Enfys gave a little bag of these to each of the Scrappy-go-Lucky Design Team  members when we met up in Los Angeles last January.  It is printed on pearlized cardstock so it fits right in with the embossed card topper.

It is extremely difficult to capture the look of the shimmery card top in a photo - I hope you can get a sense of how soft and pretty this turned out.

Inside the card, I added a white liner punched with the Martha Stewart Double Loops Punch around the page set.  There was a slight imperfection near the middle so I used a couple of small gem stickers to cover these rough spots.  A quick stamped sentiment and the card is ready to sign and give.

This card is relatively simple to color and the glimmer mist helps to blend in any imperfections.  I can't wait to try more of these with some of my other embossing folders.  I'll have some more specific tips to share on the coloring and I'll post those soon.

Today I was wondering how many of my readers are in the middle of back to school preparations?  For the first year in a long time, there is no one in our house headed back to school this fall.

  2. I can just image the sparkle/shimmer of the card. I can't get nice photos of shimmer either. You wonder about back to school preparations - I am starting...two kids are off to college, they already moved to their apartments but still come home depending on work schedules (only 1 hr. drive) and it seems they always need some sort of "supply". My youngest is preparing for his senior year of high school and I am getting ready to open my school library. So back-to-school seems well entrenched at my home! I hope you have lots of fun with the August birthdays :)

  3. How beautiful! I love your card! I am VERY interested in learning tips about coloring the embossed cardstock!

    Even though I don't have kids, I am a
primary teacher and I am always in "back to school" mode during summer...always in search of goodies I can use in my classroom in the fall!

  4. Such a beautiful card Diane. I know the photo doesn't begin to capture how pretty it is in person. We buy school supplies for neighbor kids and that is so much fun. I volunteer in our very large high school book room. we give out around 20,000 books to grades 10-12, busy busy.

  6. Thanks for sharing, Diane. I love the Glimmer Mist over the colouring. I get very timid when I mist and then I'm disappointed with the drips so thanks for reminding me to "commit" to it! I am teaching Kindergarten and Junior High this year and so I am in the process of setting up my Kinder classroom and planning my Jr. High units. I will definitely be using my E this year for school!

  7. Beautiful card, Diane. I might just become brave enough to try some glimmer mist after this! We are difinitely in "back to school mode," here -- my son starts 7th grade in a week and a half, and I am part of orientation this week for 104 future pharmacists since classes start at my work (school of pharmacy) on Monday!

  8. Sooo pretty! I just realized last night there are 4 birthdays in the next week that I should recognize with a card... but, we are in full back to school mode AND packing to move... so I don't want to drag out all of my papers & take the time to dig through my stuff until inspiration strikes... THESE are exactly the type of cards I can easily make tonight & get in the mail! Thank you so much!!
