Using the "leftovers" again...
I was very excited last night to see that I have had more than 1,000,000 visits to my blog. There will definitely be some celebrating going on. I have some super gifts on the way and I think I will do a big "Third Blogoversary/Million Hits" celebration in a few weeks! My friend Enfys is about to have a celebration on her blog and I am guest designing next week, so it seems best to wait just a bit to do it up right. Thank you all for your kind comments and support.
I meant to post some more Martha Stewart cake cartridge projects today but it has been one of those days where nothing went smoothly. I am having more problems with 4shared and they have already consumed far too many of my creative hours. I'll be changing the way I share files as soon as I can find the time to re-upload the hundreds of files I have shared over the years. I have to try to laugh about the absurdity of the situation - when thinking people are not monitoring computer programs they can do really odd things!
In early September, I posted this card that I made with Design Studio and the Creative Memories Reminisce Accents cartridge. The original post is at this LINK.
When I lifted the design for the card there were small pieces left on my mat. I have a lot of mats that I rotate in use and I sat this one aside thinking I might use the pieces. I do this frequently when the pattern left on the mat is attractive and I don't want it to go to waste.
One of my all time favorites is this two-for-one design. The red card has a cut out design and the pink card was made using the bits that remained on the mat. You can read the full information about these two cards at THIS POST from last February.
The mat with these extra bits kept being moved aside and as I was trying to restore order in my craft space last week I finally decided to do something with them. Instead of using vinyl transfer tape as I usually do, I grabbed some blue painter's tape. This usually works pretty well, however, I found a new roll of tape in my husband's workshop and, it turns out, this type is a bit stickier than the kind I tried before. I burnished the tape to the pieces on the mat...
...and then peeled up the tape with all of the pieces attached.
I applied adhesive to all of the little pieces. I use Creative Memories Precision Point Adhesive for these tiny bits of paper.
I put the tape on a white card and burnished down the pieces. Then I peeled back the tape and saw something a little different than what I expected!
The cardstock I had originally used was Core'dinations and the tape was strong enough to pull apart the layers. To prevent this problem, I probably should have touched the tape to some fabric a few times to make it less sticky. It wasn't the look I had planned on, however, I decided I liked it well enough to use. It had a sort of antique feel (at least I convinced myself that it did!).
I used some more of the "peeloffs" that I used on the original card to outline the design. I added some definition to the "ribbon ends" by using the peeloff strips to form the "V" at the sides.
This is the card that I ended up with. It seemed a little dull and I decided more contrast was needed.
So I cut out the "ribbon" and placed it on a dark blue card base. So now that the pieces have finally been used I have another mat back in the rotation and a card to send a friend. (and yes, now I have to use the "leftover" piece from the white card after I cut off the ribbon - it never ends)!

This is just proof that sometimes "uh-ohs" can turn out to be a good thing. Congratulations on the 1 million mark.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your million hits! Your blog is one of my favorites and I don't leave comments often enough to tell you what a great teacher you are! I usually read your blog first thing in the morning and then come back and read it again later. It is always so full of helful iinformation! Thank you for sharing so much of your creative talents with us! Blessings, Mary
ReplyDeleteThe last time I had this type of "bits" left on the mat that I wanted to salvage, I put the precision point adhesive on the top of them while still stuck to the mat, waited for it to dry, and then set the card on the bits and burnished them onto the adhesive. Lifted it up and the design was on the card... They are upside down, but they still look great.
ReplyDeleteHi, Thanks for sharing this wonderful info, and the site to see where I could buy promarkers without spending it on postage. And I was right, not in Utah.Bummer!! what a lucky winner!!
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with 'leftovers'!.
ReplyDeleteGreat Card.

Love this. Even if it started out as an opps! Very pretty card. TFS
ReplyDeleteGreat story. I really need to start using the "leftovers". I like the way it came out...variegated. Thanks for sharing.

I love your leftovers messages. It is one of my favorite things to do. I've had uh-oh moments but mine don't seem to come out as beautiful as yours.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on hitting the million mark and the upcoming three years. You do such an incredible job with your blog. Thank you.
Channel some of your Creativity to me, please. Fabulous use of leftover bits. Congrats on the millionth mark...wow!
ReplyDeleteWow! Congrats on hitting 1 Million!! That's awesome.
ReplyDeleteI knew I had that blue painters tape on my desk for some reason - lol! I'll just have to check how sticky it is.
ReplyDeleteI think your card looks great, even if it isn't what you planned.
Congratulations on your million hits! Wow!
ReplyDeleteDiane, I just love the way your oops looks. Congratulations on one million hits that is fantastic!
ReplyDeleteI also like to save the little bits or negative cuts here is what I do that works great. I have a roll of dry wall mesh tape that I got at Home Depot, it has like re-positionable glue on it press it on your leftovers and gently lift it (I use my pointed Cricut tool) to help lift the pieces through the wholes in the dry wall tape. Then you can keep it on there till you are ready to use it. Then just apply your glue to the pieces turn over the drywall tape and place it on your project, when your glue dried just pull off the dry wall tape and it can be used over and over. I hope this makes sense.
Congrats on the 1,000,000 mark. Great idea for the leftovers. I have look at leftovers on the mats before and thought they were interesting, but haven't used them yet. Will have to give it a try. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLove it. I like the way the tape pulled off some of the paper. Makes a more interesting card. Good for you for using leftovers.
ReplyDeleteFor being a mistake, it sure turned out to be a beautiful & elegant card. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

Amazing use of leftovers! And I like the look where the tape pulled off some of the paper/color.
ReplyDeleteI doesn't ever end...isn't it great!

I liked your process and think that was really resourceful.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the 1,000,000 views. The card is wonderful, thanks for being so economical and sharing it with us.
ReplyDeleteSo many times we only see the end results/products that come out exactly as they should - perfect. However, I hardly ever have a project that ends that way with just one try. It's important to show these 'ooops' moments. For me, many times the different results end up better than what I had planned. Plus it gives the added benefit of being 'unique'! Thank you for sharing the great things you produce, but more importantly thank you for sharing the 'ooops' things too! :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on all the hits/visitors.
ReplyDeleteIf ever there was a happy accident this was one, the effect is beautiful and I'm sure you couldn't achieve it so perfectly if you tried lol. Lovely way to use waste.
