Snowflake Card
There are now many Cricut cartridges with lovely snowflake designs (including the new mini Winter Lace). However, I still like to design my own snowflakes - then they are truly unique! I did a trial cut of the design I posted yesterday and made a card with it. Did you figure out which cartridge I used yet?
I did my first test cut in blue cardstock and then I changed my mind and decided to use some of my "special" silver cardstock. This is the silver that was in the Creative Memories line until a few years ago. I have a very small amount left and save it for special projects - I just love the soft sheen and haven't found anything similar to replace it.
To conserve this special paper, I cut the snowflake from it and even punched out a few shapes to use on another project. Then I trimmed the silver paper to 5 1/4 x 5 1/4 inches to use as the base layer on my 5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inch card.
The paper I used for the top layer is a K and Company paper from the Christmas Cheer 12 x 12 Specialty Paper Pad. This particular piece has a lovely pearl finish. There is always a strip to trim from the K and Company papers because they are bound with a hole drilled into the pad to hang for display in the store. I usually keep these in a jar to use to test pens but I saved this piece to use for another project (remember - I am a thrifty Yankee!).
The paper is almost a perfect match to the Martha Stewart cardstock I used for the card base.
I wanted to add some sparkle to my snowflake so I tested a large gem brad for size. As luck would have it, it was a perfect fit for the center of the snowflake at the size I cut it.
I used this tool from the Cricut tool kit to make a starter hole in the center of the snowflake.
I started adding gem stickers in various sizes - each of the packages of gem stickers from Creative Charms has a row of clear gems so I usually have a lot of these on hand.
I added the large blue gem brad and some blue gem stickers in the same shade of blue.
I thought the snowflake still need a bit more bling so I shifted the clear gems and added blue gems at the base of each point.
I wanted the snowflake to "float" above the card so I added foam circles in two sizes to support the snowflake.
I used my handy little tool again to mark the center of the card front so I could place the snowflake accurately.
The snowflake is now all dressed up and ready to shine!
So - does anyone have a guess about which cartridge I used? I used just one cartridge and only two elements from that cartridge.
It won't be long until the real snowflakes are flying in my part of the world. I wonder how many more paper snowflakes I can make before they arrive!
I will try to post a tutorial on making snowflakes soon - today I totally lost my voice with this cold so I may be sipping tea for the next few days...

ReplyDeleteDiane this is stunning, I have no idea which cart you used but I love it. I am going to have to try this idea for xmas cards as they are so quick.

I would use the one on Accent Essentials. Is that what you used? It turned out beautiful!

Absolutely stunning card! Knowing how creative you are about "thinking outside of the box", the cartridge you used probably had nothing to do with snowflakes.....

So pretty! I can't wait to learn more. Hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeletePaper snowflakes are the best kind, I think. That one is certainly a winner! My guess might be Winter Woodland, but I can't wait to find out which cart you used. Feel better soon so we can have a video! LoL BethAnn M.
ReplyDeleteHmm...storybook maybe? Wherever it's from, it's just lovely.
ReplyDeleteDiane this is just gorgeous! That snowflake is an eye-catcher.
ReplyDeleteWe actually had a few snowflakes in the air here yesterday.
I loved those silver and gold metallic papers too! One of the things I wish CM had kept making. I have a few pieces of silver that I am hoarding. Might just have to make a few of these snowflakes myself. Thanks for sharing this. Nancy
ReplyDeleteYou used French Manor! It looks like you used a Fleu de Lies (sp?)This is a beautiful card. Love everything you have been doing.
ReplyDeletebeautiful! my guess would be accent essentials you used... to make the snowflake.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful snowflake and one of a kind, just like the real thing, if you designed it. Not sure what cart you used, but I might guess AA or SB. Love that silvery paper too!
