Birthday Weekend...a quick card
August is a busy birthday month for our family. My husband and both of our sons have August birthdays and so do my mother-in-law and brother-in-law - five birthdays in eight days!
One of the images on the Creative Memories Cheerful Seasons cartridge that particularly appealed to me was the soft serve ice cream cone. I wanted to try a quick test cut. Here you can see the pieces - a shadow and three layers.
I cut the cone at four inches and used Core'dinations cardstock for the red shadow, the cone and the swirls. The ice cream is cut from some embossed paper that I had on hand. You can change the color to change the flavor and experiment with various embossing folders to get the look you like.
I decided to use the cone on a card. I did not find a "birthday" sentiment in the titles and word art on the Cheerful Seasons cartridge. I thought that this "celebrate good times" phrase would work nicely for a birthday card. I cut it and the layers at 2 3/4 inch.
I used a large base card which I made by folding a piece of 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock in half. The mat layer is Martha Stewart paper cut at 5 1/4 x 8 1/4. I inked the edges of the mat layer with some coordinating blue ink. When I put the card together, it looked a little dull, so...
...I pulled out my white pen and added some random groups of dots on the letters which gave the cut just a bit more spark.
We had some friends who have been vacationing in the area come visit us today. It was great to catch up with them and we had this delicious (vegan recipe) birthday cake for dessert after lunch and some sightseeing around town.
Here are two of my three birthday boys - we will get to see our older son next week and have a mini family reunion.
I have a fun project made with the Creative Charms "Deal of the Month" that I will share tomorrow. I just need to add the finishing touches. Don't forget there is a great deal this month - a $23 value for $6.99 and in your choice of pink or blue. Here is a LINK to the Creative Charms site. I hope you are having a nice weekend - our weather has been great - it finally cooled down a bit!

This card is great - I really like the swirled look of the soft serve cone. Enjoy your weekend with family & friends & birthdays!
ReplyDeleteI like that soft swirl cone, but what caught my eye first was the cute gingham paper! I think it makes the card look so summery. I also, really like the dots that you added to the sentiment. I will have to try that technique. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love the card. I really like the way celebrate pops.
ReplyDeleteI see that you sell CM and I am looking for a good paper cutter to cut more that one sheet at a time and cardboard like cereal boxes. I have the old red green and blue cutting system and the little personal trimmer. They are 10 years old and still work fine. What can you tell me about the 12 inch rotary trimmer? I am on the hunt for a good paper cutter.
Thanks,
Linda

ReplyDeleteI remember you were the first "famous" person I "met" from the Cricut boards and one of the nicest and sweetest too!!!
Adorable card!! And, that cake looks just delish! Any chance you can forward me the recipe. My daughter & I have Celiac Disease & are also highly allergic to Cow's Milk! I'm always looking for good recipes. My email is charisma at catlover dot com.
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the nice comments - I am having fun with the new CM cartridges!
ReplyDeleteLinda - I actually do not have the 12 inch rotary cutter yet. I had both the straight and the decorative 12 inch trimmers from CM and they work so well that I hadn't switched yet. When I ordered the rotary trimmer during the sale they were out of stock and I am waiting for mine to arrive in October!
You can see a video demo of the rotary trimmer HERE It is meant for paper or cardstock, not heavier materials or multiple sheets.
To cut multiple sheets of paper or chipboard I actually don't use a rotary trimmer. I got a guillotine
style trimmer a long time ago which works pretty well if you remember to hold the paper down to keep it straight. I am not totally happy with mine so I hesitate to recommend it.
I have heard people mention both Carl and Tonic as good trimmers but I have not tried either of these. I'll let you know if I can find more information.
I know the feeling on those August birthdays. We have 4 of them. The 3rd,4th,5th and 6th! It is almost like Christmas!
