A Funny Quilting Song...
If you are a long time reader of my blog, you know that I am also a quilter (or, more accurately, a lapsed quilter!). Paper crafting has taken over my time in the past few years and I have done more sewing on paper than fabric. I do think that there is a big overlap between quilters and paper crafters with many common tendencies including collecting massive amounts of paper (or fabric) and tools - including expensive electronic devices in each case.
The "Unfinished Object" (or "UFO") is also common to both quilters and paper crafters. The three photos in this post are of quilt tops that I have made that just want to be turned into real quilts...someday....
I want to share this clever video and song for any of my blog readers who are also quilters. Cathy Miller, "The Singing Quilter," came to my quilt guild and performed this song and many others for us. She is both a quilter and a musician and "You Can Quilt That Out" is a song she wrote that is composed of things that were actually said to professional long-arm quilters she knows.
If you don't know what a long-arm quilter is, they are people who use specialized machines that have a long "reach" of the sewing machine head which moves around on a frame to make quilting large areas much easier. There is a good photo of a long arm machine in the video. The machines are quite expensive and many people who own one do quilting for hire. As in any service business - they hear all sorts of things from their clients!
The video was made by Mavis Rosbach of Quiltbird Studio in Georgia. If you would like to find out more about Cathy Miller, The Singing Quilter you can visit her website HERE.
I was busy today with some projects that I can't share for a few more days (or weeks). I also made a little more progress on the scraproom reorganization quest. I hope you are having a good week so far.

Thanks for sharing that! Beautiful quilts, too! She has a great voice!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty quilt tops. I have given some thought to trying this, but the expense always deters me. You did an awesome job on yours! Loved the video.

I love your quilt tops. I completely understand where you are coming from. Just a couple of weeks ago I returned to my sister a crazy quilt top we had made for our parents 50th anniversary that need to be finished, their anniversary was 8 years ago!! Oops time flies when you'd rather do other things.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing the video of the singing quilter,I am also a sewer/quliter who has discovered card making and paper crafting and have only sewn on paper in a while. I also have collected lots of paper to keep my fabric stash company. Thanks for all the great help you give everyone. Dee in N.J.
ReplyDeleteThat's why I tie my quilts! Way easier. Of course then it's not truly a quilt, but no one's ever complained yet.
ReplyDeleteAll your quilts are nice, but I like the middle one the best - beautiful colors, so cheery.
I hope one day to be like Grandma Doris with a closet full of quilts that the grandchildren choose from when they come to stay over. Ask your hubby about that. They were all just tied, also, and apparently he liked to pick out the ties. What a stinker!
Diane,
ReplyDeleteThese quilts are so great. My Mom who is now 82 and in a wheelchair has done many beautiful quilts. Maybe someday I can send you some pictures. These are so great. I have her frames and wish I could do quilting but I have to many hobbies as it is. I love the quilts and thanks for sharing with us.
Diane,
ReplyDeleteI posted a note but it did not show. I hope this is not two of them. I love the quilts. My mom who is now 82 and in a wheelchair has given me some of the most beautiful quilts. I will take some pictures and send them to you. These are great. She & I did a wildflower quilt where all the blocks are counted cross stitch and put together. It is so great.
Thanks for sharing this with us all.
Lovely quilt tops whose images would also make great cards. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteLove the song and so true about quilters and paper crafters. I also use to quilt than went to scrapbooking than card making, each time moving to something that I could see a finished product much sooner. I to have tons of material and paper/cardstock, I say I am stocking up for when I retire and can't afford to buy it then. My hubby has been waiting many months for me to hem his jeans with my 6,000.00 sewing machine, but one of these days.....
ReplyDeleteI am jealous of quilters. My grandmother made quilts for a living but some how it was lost after my mom's generation. The ladies of our church quilt during the school year. I make their lunch several time a season but that is as close as they let me get to a quilt. : ) Your tops are beautiful. Now get one of them in a frame and start quilting!
ReplyDeleteDiane, I started as a quilter and have gone back to it for a few months to make some wedding quilts. YOu are so right that there is a definite connection - keep buying paper or fat quarters! There will always be sometime that you need that fabric or papter.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
I don't quilt but loved the song!! What gorgeous quilts too. Sounds like me.....soon I'll be looking for someone to finish some of my scrapbooks!! LOL
ReplyDeleteReally stunning quilts. You are so talented!!!
